Portable Satellite Radio
Find out about portable satellite radio
The portability of satellite radio is certainly one of its key selling features. In your car, in your home or on your boat—you can bring the programming with you anywhere. Nothing is more portable than the handheld wireless satellite portable radio, which lets you take commercial-free radio literally anywhere you go.
Soundtrack of Life
Much like portable FM radios, the Walkman, the Discman and the evolution of the mp3 player, satellite radio is the next medium to go everywhere you do. Portable satellite radios are about the same size as mp3 players—sleek and thin and can fit in the palm of your hand. They usually have a built-in antenna like cell phones and an LCD screen to display the programming. Every channel you can get at home or in your car, you can get sitting in the park or on your lunch hour at work or school.
Multi-Tools
Handheld satellite radio players are really handy because you can bring your favorite programs with you wherever you go. But the true innovation comes from their multi-functionality. If you really like a song you are listening to or the play-by-play of an amazing goal needs to be heard again, most models allow you to rewind live radio and listen to it again. If you don’t want to miss the game as it unfolds or can’t find the time to listen to it live, you can also record hours of programming on these units. Some models let you record close to 50 hours of radio, and some even let you record different channels at the same time.
There is a fair bit of storage space inside these portable radios, so you can even upload mp3s from your computer to bring with you, or download your recorded radio as mp3 files onto your computer. Hybrid mp3 satellite radio players are the next step in portable, personal audio.
Portable XM radios and portable Sirius radios are almost all dockable, meaning you can plug them into your car or home stereo to listen to satellite radio in these zones. The reception on portable radios is not the greatest, though, especially in heavily bricked buildings and in urban areas with lots of tall buildings. Listening while at work or in class may not go as planned.
